Our Story

Coffee, comfort, culture & community

A downtown North Conway destination since 2002 — locally owned, family-run, and grown into three New England gathering places where great coffee meets local art.

Where It Began

Rooted in North Conway since 2002

The Met first opened its doors in downtown North Conway in 2002. Larry and Diane Flaherty were locals long before they were owners — they loved the historical building The Met Downtown now inhabits so much that in 2014 they bought it, and they've been pouring their hearts into it ever since.

More than twenty years on, The Met is still proudly local and family-owned, built on three things the Flahertys never compromise: quality, the customer experience, and dependability. They're grateful to have been so warmly welcomed by the community, and proud to call North Conway their home away from home.

Recognition

Award-Winning Coffee & Ownership

More than twenty years in, our coffee house has earned some recognition we're deeply proud of.

Best of NH — New Hampshire Magazine

The Metropolitan Coffee House has been voted a New Hampshire Magazine Best of NH winner more than once — including a 2021 Readers' Poll win — and has long been celebrated as one of New England's best coffee houses.

2025 Employer of the Year

In 2025, owners Larry & Diane Flaherty were named the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce's Employer of the Year — honored for building a workplace “rooted in respect, mentorship, and opportunity,” where staff are encouraged to grow and step into leadership roles. It's recognition of what The Met has always been: not just a community gathering place, but a genuinely great place to work.

Coffee Meets Canvas

Art in every café

From the day we opened, our walls have belonged to local artists. Today all three cafés — downtown North Conway, Settlers Green, and Freeport — showcase rotating work from painters and makers across the Mt. Washington Valley and New England.

Specialty drinks

A wide variety of caffeinated and caffeine-free specialty drinks, with seasonal rotations.

Breakfast & lunch

A large spread of breakfast and lunch options.

Art in every café

All three of our cafés double as galleries, sharing our walls with rotating work from Mt. Washington Valley and New England artists.

Community first

Hikers, locals, shoppers, and travelers — everyone has a seat at The Met. That's the whole point.
